John and Margaret Haas applied for permission to emigrate with their infant son Henry from Siegkreis, Nordrhein-Westfalen, in 1869.14 They arrived in Baltimore, Maryland, on 11 Oct 1869, aboard the S. S. Baltimore having departed Bremen, traveling in steerage class.15,16 John and Margaret appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Eagle Twp., Black Hawk Co., Iowa, enumerated 20 Aug 1870, living with Harry Feldood and his wife Catherine, who according so un-sourced online trees was his sister. John reported real estate valued at $1,600 and personal estate of $150. Their children Henry and Peter were listed as living with them.17 John and Margaret appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., Iowa, enumerated 21 Jun 1880. Their children Henry, John, William, Mary, Frances and Margaret were listed as living with them.18 John and Margaret appeared on the 1885 State Census of Vine St., Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., Iowa. Their children Henry, John, William, Mary, Frances, Margaret and Catherine were listed as living with them.19 John identified himself as a farmer when he immigrated, and in the 1870 census.20,21 A 1909 local history, in a sketch about his son John tells us that his father "later engaged in merchandising" in Waterloo until 1886. However his would appear to be an example of such publications' practice of embellishing family histories in order to increase sales, as John reported his occupation as laborer in the 1880 and 1885 censuses.22,23,24 John and Margaret moved to Clyde, Nodaway Co., Missouri, in 1886.25 There, the same suspect source tells us, he was engaged in the hardware and implement business until his death.
